Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks – Deluxe Edition

Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks shall also be available in a deluxe edition. The premium version of the release will include a hard slipcase decorated in the fashion house’s monogram print which itself is covered in cards and created from canvas; together, the design elements of the case aptly represent an LV trunk, decorated with hotel cards from various destinations. Priced around $200 and naturally limited in number, the edition is set to release exclusively at Louis Vuitton stores, including their online store. For all those interested in the project, the brand has set up this pop-up site detailing further information.

“Show me your luggage and I’ll tell you who you are.”
—Louis Vuitton advertising slogan, 1921

So here we are. It was bound to happen. After making so many trunks, including some to carry books, here is our first book about trunks. One hundred trunks. Trunks that are extraordinary in every way, for a hundred reasons, as much for what they carried as for the work, the care, the inventiveness, and the ingenuity required to make them. One hundred trunks. No easy task, obviously […] Of course they can no longer travel but their story in transit for a time, takes another turn. This book brings them all back to safe harbor.
Foreword by Patrick-Louis Vuitton [extract]

In 1854, Louis Vuitton offered a modern trunk that combined pragmatism and elegance, perfectly adapted to the current means of transport and changes in the lives of his clients. From trains and legendary ocean liners to automobiles and the first aircraft, the Vuitton trunk has crossed time and borders. The Maharaja of Baroda, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, Douglas Fairbanks, Ernest Hemingway, Karl Lagerfeld, Sharon Stone—even Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami have traveled with Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks by Pierre Léonforte and Éric Pujalet-Plaà, with a preface by Patrick-Louis Vuitton, showcases 100 of the most beautiful trunks produced by the Louis Vuitton Maison. The trunk bed, steamer trunk, tea case, toiletry kit, circus trunk, library trunk, and caviar box are just a few of the many incredible pieces featured, along with the equally incredible stories of their creation. Illustrated with more than 800 images taken from the Louis Vuitton archives and new photographs made especially for this book, this lush volume is the definitive history of personalized objects of both practicality and luxury.

There will be two editions available. A trade edition available in bookstores and Amazon which retails for US$125, and the Louis Vuitton Deluxe Edition (French version pictured above).

Louis Vuitton Deluxe Edition features a hard slipcase with the Monogram canvas reinterpreted from the 1896 original pattern and covered with hotel label stickers. The book is printed on offset and coated paper, serie of cards. Available exclusively in Louis Vuitton stores and online at louisvuitton.com for €145 or approximately US$200.
