Hip-Hop fans of the popular social networking game "Mafia Wars" will now have another reason to spend time glued to their Facebook pages. The game's parent company, Zynga, recently announced "Hustlin With Dre," a dedicated area within the game that comes complete with virtual goods and previews of Dr. Dre’s upcoming album, Detox.
"We’re always looking for innovative and interesting ways for fans to discover great music and with an artist of Dre’s cultural significance we really wanted something special that’s never been done before," Jimmy Iovine, Chairman, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, said. "We felt it was a perfect fit for Dre to be the first musical experience for the millions of Mafia Wars players to enjoy while gaming."
Mafia Wars players can now get an exclusive look at the video for "Kush," which they’re able to stream for free. But aside from that, there are Dre-inspired items to collect, like weapons, vintage cars and headphones. By collecting all the items, and depending on their efficiency, players will be entered into a chance to win a signed copy of Detox or Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.
"Mafia Wars" reportedly has 19 million players between Facebook and the iPhone. The game revolves around a player advancing his or her criminal empire by creating clans through social networks. This past summer, they partnered with Dr. Dre's cohort Snoop Dogg for a huge stunt where he blew up a 4-ton armored truck in a live webcast to celebrate the game reaching 10 million players.
The upside to Dre partnering with Zynga is that he can leverage the huge audience that is already tapped into the producer's world. Players can even purchase his "Kush" single directly from iTunes through the game. One more thing to convince fans that Detox really is on the way.
