Louis Vuitton Diwali Season 2010
It’s official. India has arrived on the radar of the world’s most powerful luxury goods conglomorate, Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), known simply to fashionistas as Louis Vuitton, or LV.
If you’re thinking that’s old news, you’re right. Louis Vuitton and India have had a love affair since the early 1900’s when Maharajas routinely placed orders for bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage. In fact, the Maharaja of Kapurthala ordered more than 50 customized Louis Vuitton trunks for his clothes, tea and turbans. Today his grandson, Tikka Shatrujit Singh, opens those trunks with the same master key.
But this is 2010 – the era of global Indo-cool. And Indians are a consumer force to be reckoned with.
And Louis Vuitton is reckoning in a big way. Marking their long and prosperous relationship with India, Louis Vuitton will celebrate Diwali by transforming their store windows worldwide to an Indian theme. This is the first time LV has celebrated one festival throughout all their locations globally.
Louis Vuitton stores from Beirut to Shanghai, Johannesburg to Oslo will feature windows designed by Indian artist Rajeev Sethi, featuring columns of trunks, specially crafted and handpainted in India on banana fiber paper, glowing from the inside.
And the Louis Vuitton love goes further. Later this month as part of their Salons de Louis Vuitton (a cross-country series of exclusive and unique cultural experiences,) LV will hold a private dinner in New York hosted by Waris Aluwalia and Jhumpa Lahiri.
Still, this is the uber-luxury brand we’re talking about so they can’t stop here. There’s more and it’s oh so covet-worthy. Louis Vuitton is reimagining 40 pieces from its summer and winter 2010 collections using vintage saris from across India. These limited edition ready-to-wear pieces will be sold exclusively in the LV Paris Montaigne store.
If you can’t make it to Paris (you know, because your jet’s being remodeled), you can take a look at the atelier made pieces below.

Happy Diwali from Louis Vuitton and Republic of Brown.
