EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: A Preview of 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' With Intel From the Show's Creator

Ever since 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' ended its run in the spring, fans of the franchise have been eagerly awaiting the next installment of the saga.

On Jan. 21, Starz will debut 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,' a six-episode prequel series starring John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Jaime Murray and Australian actor Dustin Clare as Gannicus, the House of Batiatus' most feared gladiator.

In the exclusive clip below, 'Spartacus' creator Steven S. DeKnight talks about the prequel season, and the three-minute clip also reveals some tasty glimpses of the intrigue Batiatus and his wife Lucretia will be unleashing this season.

As DeKnight explains in the clip, even if you haven't seen 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' you can jump right in with 'Gods of the Arena,' which takes place before the 'Blood and Sand' season. The prequel series follows the rise of young Batiatus (Hannah), who is eager to wrest control of the family's gladiatorial enterprise from his father.

But young Gannicus (Clare), the house's champion, has a taste for wine and women. Will that interfere with his skills in the arena? Will the ambitious Batiatus and his devious wife, Lucretia (Lawless), go too far? How will the warriors Crixus (Manu Bennett) and Oenomaus (Peter Mensah) fare amongst all these schemers?

It promises to be a soapily enjoyable ride. Even if it isn't (though I have faith in 'Spartacus,' given how bold and enthralling the first season was), I certainly have zero regrets about putting 'Blood and Sand' on my year-end Top 10 list.

For my most recent story on the planned second season of 'Spartacus' and the effort to recast the title role (Andy Whitfield had to drop out of season 2 due to a recurrence of his illness, though he appears briefly at the start of 'Gods of the Arena'), look here.
